There are two ways of travelling to Crete.

1. By air : Arriving in Iraklion (Chania is also possible but further away

2. By ferry : Daily from Ancona (or Bari) to Patras. From there you follow the highway to Pireas ( this takes about 2 hours - tollcosts are about 6 Euro). From Pireas you take the ferry again, it operates daily to either Iraklion or Chania.

Example:

Munich-Ancona: 780 km (highway: 8-?? h)
Ancona-Patras: 22 hours (superfast-ferry 19 h)
Patras-Pireas: 200 km (highway: approx. 2 h )
Pireas-Heraklion: 10 hours (superfast-ferry 7,5 h)

All in all is one well 2.5 days on the way, whereby the largest distance is put back on sea. If one thus has enough vacation and time (over perhaps spend a few day in Italy) is worthwhile oneself this small Trip in any case.
