Fish

Due to the tourist trade ,fishing has a great significance in Crete. There is a large fishing fleet on the north coast particularly in Iraklion and in Chania. In addition to this nearly every seaside town will have a small number of fishermen who provide fish for the restaurants ensuring that there is always fresh fish on the menu. The most widely available fish are: sardines, anchovies, mackerel, sword fish, perch, cuttle fish and octopus.

Caretta-Caretta

The Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta) is a sea turtle and the only member of the genus Caretta. The female nesting season is at its peak in June and July (Beach of Comos and Kalamaki)

Game goats

The Lassithi-area ranges surrounded by mountain, and have a height from 850m to 2148m. Here there are game goats, mentioned by the cretan-people KriKri or Agrimi.

Birds

There are a number of Falcons and Golden Eagles on Crete but in recent years due to senseless hunting there numbers are decreasing. The birds are now protected by law and ant interference with them or their eggs carry very heavy fines. Other birds on Crete are Robins, Field Larks, Sparrows, Herons and the Coral Seagull.

Cats and dogs

There are many cats and dogs in Crete, many of which live wild. The most have no problems to survive but also you may see sick or injured animals. The Cretan attitude (like in most of the countries in the south) to these animals is not the same as ours bacause they see them as of no use to anyone. Other European nations such as the Germans can take these animals home and it is a relatively simple procedure. However because of our Rabies laws is it still very difficult to do this in England.

There is an organisation which helps the animals called “Archenoah” and information on this can be found in Chania.
