Gortys

An der Haupstrasse von Heraklion kurz vor Mires befinet sich der historische Ort Gortys.

Eines der ältesten und wichtigsten Denkmäler des Christentums auf Kreta ist die Basilika Agios Titos in Gortys. Hier fand der erste Bischof von Kreta im Jahre 59 n. Chr. seinen Sitz.

In der Mitte von Gortys befinden sich in Stein gehauen die ältesten Gesetzestexte (500 - 450 v. Chr.) von Europa. Der Rechtstext umfaßt neben staatsrechtlichen auch privatrechtliche Angelegenheiten, insbesondere das Erb- und Familienrecht.

Noch eine Besonderheit die hier zu bewundern ist, ist die immergrüne Platane, unter welcher Zeus mit Europa den Minos gezeugt haben soll.

Gortys

The historical town of Gortys is located on the main roads from Iraklion near Mires.

One of the oldest and most important monuments of Christianity in Crete, the Basilica of Agios Titos, can be found there.
The oldest legal texts in Europe can be found here, chiselled in stone. The texts include state legalities and also private law pertaining to inheritance and family fights.

Gortys is also the location of the evergreen Plane tree under which, legend states. Zeus consummated the relationship which led to his son Minos being born.

The Gortys centre is open daily from 8a.m till 8 p.m. and entrance is 2.00 Euros (reductions for children students and OAPs take identification)
