Phaistos (Festos)

Nach dem Palast von Knossos ist Phaistos der zweitgrösste minoische Palast auf Kreta. Er wurde ca. 1900 v. Chr. erbaut, jedoch ca. 1700 v. Chr. zum ersten Mal durch ein Erdbeben zerstört. Vor Vollendung des Wiederaufbaus um 1450 v. Chr. wurde der Palast zum zweiten Mal durch eine bisher unaufgeklärte Katastrophe erneut zerstört.

Unter zahlreichen Artefakten wurde auch der berühmte "Diskos von Phaistos" gefunden, der bis heute nicht entschlüsselt werden konnte. Es gibt zahlreiche Theorien, was die hieroglyphische Linear-A-Schrift in der Tontafel bedeuten könnte. Es wird unter anderem vermutet, dass es sich um einen religiösen Gesangstext handelt, da sich bestimmte Zeichengruppen wie eine Art Refrain wiederholen.

Phaistos (Festos)

Phaistos is the location of the second largest of the Minoan palaces in Crete. It was built in 1900 B.C. but was destroyed by an earthquake in approx 1700 B.C. Reconstruction began again but before it was completed the palace was destroyed yet again by an unexplained disaster. It was another 250 years before the Palace was finally completed.

Of the numerous artefacts found here the most famous perhaps id the "Diskuss of Phaistos" which has not yet been decoded. There are numerous theories of what the disc contains, among them is that it is a religious singing text as the writing seems to repeat itself as a kind of chorus.
