Kokkinos Pyrgos

Visit the seaside village with its long promenade, sandy beach and shallow waters.

Kokkinos Pyrgos is a small village on the beach with a harbor for fishing boats, which until a few years ago was still quite untouched for tourists – although that’s not entirely true, because in the 80s and 90s there were also travelers from all over the world here participated, lived a long time. Then it became quiet in Kokkinos Pyrgos until a few years ago the online rental of accommodation increased and the village has experienced an upswing since then.

Kokkinos Pyrgos Beach is very popular with families as there are no stone slabs, only sand and shallow access to the water. The harbor wall, which leads far into the water, protects this stretch of beach and so you can swim well here even on windy days.

Travel to South Crete
The eastern part of the beach, from the port to the military area, is called Katalyki and is very well organized with umbrellas, sun loungers, many different restaurants, cafes, a pizzeria, and for 2 years also a lifeguard. In summer it is mainly locals and guests from other parts of Greichland who come here, but there are also more and more foreign tourists who love the feeling of being among Greeks.

In Kokkinos Pyrgos there is also a lot of hustle and bustle in the evening because the Makao Beach Club attracts many guests who enjoy the mild summer nights after dinner for a drink with sometimes Greek and sometimes international music.

In addition to the main beach, Kokkinos Pyros also has a much quieter stretch of beach behind the harbor. In the tavern “Red Castle” you can eat very well and enjoy the beautiful beach atmosphere without traffic.
Great sunset!
From here you can walk for about 1.5 hours along the water to Agia Galini. The path is rocky and very sunny, but beautiful.

In the other direction, the beach is unfortunately demarcated by a military area, so you cannot walk any further to Afrathias, Kalamaki, and Komos, but that will certainly change in the next few years as a lot is being developed in the region.
