Kokkinos Pirgos

Kokkinos Pirgos - The red Tower

The small seaport Kokkinos Pirgos is located in the south of Crete and belongs to the municipality of Phaistos. Translated, Kokkinos Pirgos is called "the red tower". According to stories, once a red clay tower, presumably a lighthouse, was said to have stood in the village, to which it owes its name - further information is not known. Kokkinos Pirgos is still untouched by mass tourism, but due to its very long beach a popular excursion destination for the locals. Especially in the summer months, you will find many Greeks sitting on the long beach promenade with all its small restaurants, bars and cafes.

In Kokkinos Pirgos are only two small hotels, but a nice selection of private accommodations. Below are some treasures that offer fantastic views of the sea and amazing sunsets. There is also a small supermarket where you will find everything for your daily needs.

Kokkinos Pirgos – What you can discover here

During the summer months boat- and diving trips to the opposite, uninhabited Paximadia Islands are offered. It´s about one hour to drive, and you will enjoy a pure touch of beautiful nature. They start directly from the small, picturesque harbor. Also nice to know: In the very early morning hours you can still meet real, native fishermen who offer their fresh fish directly for sale at the harbor.

Every Friday in the neighboring village Timbaki a local weekly market takes place. Farmers from the area sell their fresh fruits and vegetables, olives and sheep's cheese, as well as many herbs and mountain herbs. But also clothes and things for the household are offered there. It´s worth a visit, if you want to feel real Crete.

Kokkinos Pirgos is very centrally located for popular destinations in the area. For example hikes in the Psiloritis Mountains, swimming trips to the popular Komos beach or exploring the hippie spot Matala. Also the small village of Agia Galini or the archaeological sites Phaistos, Gortyn and Agia Triada are just a short drive away.
