The Municipality of Phaistos and the members and representatives of «Klimatogi Cultural Association» at Listaros village, had coordinated and well-intentioned cooperation that lead to the purchase and transport of a state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz Econic garbage truck from Cologne to southern Crete.
For a few years now, a small community of 9 different nationalities (Greeks, Austrians, Belgians, Czechs, Germans, Italians, Poles, Swiss and recently French) has been living harmoniously at the beautiful Listaros settlement, placed at the south of Heraklion, Crete. In 2017, this multicultural community founded the «Klimatogi Cultural and Adornment Association». Their primary objectives were the preservation of the area’s natural environment, whilst upgrading the quality of life for both Listaros’ inhabitants and those of the wider region – which is part of Phaistos Municipality – through various activities and actions.
It was during the annual celebration of Listaros’ village church, on June 24, 2018, when the long-standing need for addition of a modern waste collection vehicle in the services of the Municipality, became known. Without any second thoughts, the «Klimatogi Cultural Association» members decided to do their best for locating, supplying and transporting such vehicle from abroad. The «target» was found and a Mercedes-Benz Econic family model from the Municipality of Cologne -which regularly sells the vehicles that are part of its ranks- was ready for travelling to Crete.
Having turned out to be successful in less than 90 days, whilst marking a healthy partnership between public and private sector, the project became reality due to the enormous effort of Mr. Giorgos Ammoutakis (Mayor of the Municipality of Festos), Mr. Nikos Mavromanolakis (President of Klimatogi Cultural Association), as well as the aid of many friends and supporters.
After a series of contacts and consultations, two members of the Municipality of Festos staff traveled to Cologne on September 12, 2018, in order to sign the -financially favorable- purchase agreement for the vehicle.Instantly and having been helped by both the representatives of the City of Cologne and the city’s waste collection company, they began the 2,000-kilometer journey to bring the state-of-the-art garbage truck in Crete.
On September 21, the Mercedes-Benz garbage truck arrived and was ready for action, in the central square of Moires city. It is worth noting that the truck’s transportation was fully supported by Grimaldi Group / Minoan Lines, that provided the cost of vehicle’s tickets from Ancona, Italy, to Patras, Greece and then from Piraeus to Heraklion, Crete.
If anything, this is an exemplar effort for both local community and Greek society in general, that will definitely improve the everyday life of the area’s inhabitants. Meanwhile, this action will help reducing the negative environmental consequences that come from the lack of garbage collection. All mentioned above, take place in one of the most beautiful Greek sceneries, on the edge of Municipality of Festos, which has a population of 25,000 permanent inhabitants and attracts thousands of tourists during every season of the year.
(The Mercedes-Benz Econic meets the Euro V environmental norm and has a minimum weight (empty) of 14,400 kg. Its length is 9,550 meters, its width is 2,550 meters, while its maximum height marginally exceeds 3 meters. The fuel storage tank of this model version has a capacity of 300 liters, and average consumption in real traffic conditions ranges from 35 to 40 liters per 100 «mixed» kilometers. Finally, the truck is equipped with a modern 6.8 L diesel engine and power output of 290 PS.)
