Panagiá in Mártsalos

The cave church of Panagiá is located at the entrance of the 2km long canyon Martsalos and can only be reached on foot. The gorge ends at a picturesque palm beach on the Libyan Sea. Around the church are still caves, dormitory of the hermits.

The buildings are dated to the early Christian period, the church served the first Christian as a catacomb, as a refuge from the Christians-persecutors.

In the cave there are many frescoes and an impressive, natural dome, from which hangs a large chandelier. It is believed that the chapel was built on the site of a Minoan tomb, as it has a conical shape reminiscent of an oven.
